Hong Kong – December 2, 2021 – Hong Kong’s oldest and largest independent law firm, Deacons, commemorates its 170th anniversary in 2021. Although the celebrations have been toned down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the firm has marked this milestone by several manners during the year.
This extraordinary achievement comes at a time when Hong Kong’s fast-paced business environment is changing with the launch of Wealth Management Connect and increasing access to dynamic markets in the Greater Bay Area. Rapid progress is being made in the area of ââintellectual property rights, with niche topics such as plant breeders’ rights and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) gaining more and more attention. Digitization in the financial space is the norm and new terrains are being tackled every day in Fintech, digital payments and cryptocurrencies. The first listing of specialist acquisition companies (SPAC) on the city’s stock exchange seems imminent.
It is in this context that Deacons’ connection to the market and its knowledge of the regional business community helps shape its vision and direction for the future.
Lilian Chiang, Senior Partner and Head of Real Estate, Deacons commented: âIn 1851, who could have imagined that Hong Kong would become one of the world’s foremost financial centers? It was an amazing trip, both for Hong Kong and for us as a company. The affairs of deacons literally evolved with Hong Kong. As the needs of our clients have become more and more diverse, there has been a constant need to adapt while keeping in mind maintaining a strong culture of observing traditional values.
A third-party perception study conducted in 2020 showed that while the firm is viewed as a strong local player, it maintains its international outlook and practices with clients, highlighting the firm’s personal and friendly attributes. With its work in cutting edge fields, the firm is perceived to be modern, young, energetic and more gender balanced.
Taylor Hui, Financial Services Group Partner, Deacons noted: âOver the years, a combination of local and expatriate lawyers who are longtime residents of Hong Kong has given the firm very strong local roots. Recent developments have included the formation of collaborative industry groups such as Private Wealth, Fintech, Financial Institutions, among others, which build on our strong property, litigation and intellectual property practices.
Sabrina Fung, partner in the firm’s Corporate Finance group, said: âAlmost 50% of our partners and key leaders are women and we believe that embracing cultural diversity is essential to create equal opportunities in our workplace. While this is a good thing in and of itself, it also benefits our business. “
Deacons has been closely involved in the local community for many years. On the CSR front, she has been a strong supporter of âOperation Santa Clausâ and has also been involved in the long term with many local charities including the Hong Chi Association, ImpactHK, the Red Cross of Hong Kong and the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association. .
