Chris Chan was reportedly recorded saying she sexually assaulted his elderly mother, who may have dementia
Virginia attorney representing controversial internet personality Chris Chan – who was arrested on Sunday for incest – has suggested that the internet does not understand and misrepresent the facts of his client’s case.
Chris Chan, whose legal name is Christine Weston Chandler, 39, was arrested days after an audio recording leaked in which Chandler allegedly admitted to raping his 79-year-old mother who is believed to have dementia. Chandler’s lawyer, David L. Heilberg told Newsweek that Chandler is “legally disabled with mental health issues ”- and that these issues, in part, influence the way she presents herself online.
“Ms. Chandler’s frequent and sometimes excessive internet presence is in part the product of mental health issues causing misguided attention-seeking and often provocative engagement with others,” Heilberg said.
(NOTE: Chandler identifies as a trans woman and uses her pronouns. Crime Online will use her pronouns in accordance with statements by authorities, court documents, and local media reports.)
Heilberg reportedly said Chandler had not received adequate support for his well-documented mental health issues because Virginia lacks mental health treatment facilities. While Heilberg and law enforcement did not disclose the nature of Chandler’s mental health issues, Chandler claimed she suffered from high-level autism – a term many advocates and researchers have found it to be dilapidated.
Heilberg told Newsweek: “There are few people who have real personal knowledge of what happened. Just because you’ve heard or read something doesn’t mean it’s true.
Chandler was denied bail on Thursday in a hearing that required her to stomp her foot when she was not allowed to retrieve her items, halt proceedings to correct the judge over her pronouns and shouting: “I’m famous on the Internet” as prosecutors. explained how spectators live streamed his arrest.

It should be noted that Chandler is charged with incest at this point, not rape. Authorities have not publicly identified the other person involved in the incest case, but Greene County Police described them as a “victim” in a press release. Their investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be laid.
Chandler was first introduced to many as Chris Chan, the creator of Sonichu, a fictional webcomic inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog and Pikachu from the Pokemon series. Over the decades that followed, Chandler was the target of countless doxing and trolling campaigns online and in person.
Chandler’s life has essentially been spent so that the world can see it – and, at times, manipulate it. A the whole Wiki page painstakingly recounts every detail of the native of Virginia– including what outfit they wore in a vlog – and Chandler is the subject of a ongoing YouTube documentary series which is in its 59th installment,
Chandler is due to return to court on September 16.
