Since the disappearance of LASPO in 2012, legal aid services have been on the verge of collapse due to successive cuts and the impact of COVID-19. A growing number of defendants now no longer have a lawyer or access to legal advice when facing criminal charges, resulting in more hearings and can end up costing more. Is there even a future for young lawyers who enter the profession of criminal lawyers funded by legal aid? And what can we, the legal professions, do about it?
